Hello, and welcome to my page. First we will start with some background information on me. I currently own a housing company, where I do both renovations and new construction. I have been working in construction for ten years. 5 with my own company and 5 as a project manager. Prior to construction I was a school teacher. So, how does a school teacher go from teaching to construction? I first started framing in 1986, and every year after I worked the summers in the construction industry (except for a three year period where I obtained my automotive ticket). One day I was offered a position as a project manager, and as the money was twice what I made as a teacher I jumped at the chance.

After working with people for a few years I realized that 70 to 80% of the jobs that I was quoting could be done by the home owner if they had some basic knowledge taught to them. It took me a while to get my company to the point where I no longer needed to work 12 hours a day, and I could start a consultation aspect of my company.

The majority of repairs needed around the home don't require a contractor. I use the rule of thumb that if you don't need a permit, you can probably do it yourself. Now saying this, some larger jobs, the average person may not want to do because of time, but that doesn't mean they can't do it. They just don't have the time.

It is a little known fact that even if you hire a contractor, there are jobs that you can do that will save you money. Don't always believe that only your contractor can do the job right. With some basic how to's, you can have the job done, and keep some money in your pocket.
